i once watched a young man say goodbye to a friend.  he didn't look sad standing in front of the grave  he just looked content, like a weight had just been lifted  and he was finally able to move on.   a brown backpack hung off his shoulder.  wire framed glasses sat on the bridge of his nose  and his messy hair was hidden by a big green beret.   he turned to leave and as he walked past me he smiled.  i smiled back.   the wind carried leaves across the streets and i soon left as well.  each house i walked by was the same, with chipped paint and broken bricks.  (even the wall

Being the slack-jawed coffee-jockey that I am, I see many faces through the course of the day, all begging me for their daily fill of government approved drugs, and I, always at least half-asleep at the time, would oblige them. The orders varied greatly. My favorite was: "Small black coffee." Short, sweet and to the point. Just grab a cup, and pump the coffee. Then there were the orders I had to write down. The ones that specified the drink's temperature, fat content, flavoring, and dryness (I'm serious. People tell me how dry to make their drinks). It was enough to make me want to throw the drink in their faces and watch as

There he was again.  Sitting outside the Cathedral, crossed-legs, making marks on the newspaper. Same time: 8:45. Same blue jumper. Same old trainers.  Not that I can criticise.  I still can't see his face. It's parallel to the paper on his lap. The hair is generic brown.  Actually, he's pretty uninteresting. It's just strange how he is always there when I pass. Like our schedules are intertwined (or they just overlap).  The spot where he sits, on the wall, is 100m from a bus stop. Maybe he's waiting for a bus, maybe not. Why doesn't he sit on a bench? There are plenty there.  I keep walking.  Next day, the

Salt was the smell that Katrina Marsden identified pressing up thinly against the inside of the closed windows. In actuality the most prominent scent was that of tea leaves; if truth be told it was downright overwhelming and seemed to fill the entirety of the house as well as cloud around the exterior walls. Regardless, she mostly smelled the salt.    It was well into the evening and the moon's light rested gently on her black coffee hair and swiped itself upside the buttons of her cranberry coat. Katrina had been standing on the front porch of the attractive house for a good two minutes and had a feeling that its occupant, if

When I was a little girl, I believed that my toys would talk behind my back and have parties while I was away. I'm twenty-five years old, and I still believe that.    It was a foggy day when I came upon Duke. I was making my rounds before dinner, as usual, when I decided to make a stop in the local antique shop. I can indulge myself just this once, I thought. The trinkets and things there are always so much fun.   An ancient, owl-eyed man behind the counter turned in my direction. "Hello, miss." I nodded my head in acknowledgment. After noticing how intently I was examining agèd diaries and jewelry boxes, he adde

Eating Richard   Gerimo Stylus had known the man was a good choice.   His latest dinner guest reminded him faintly of the Unabomber: grey hooded sweatshirt, straw colored hair, medium weight and height.  In other words, remarkably unremarkable.  Well... perhaps that assessment wasn't entirely accurate.  His eyes were an unnaturally bright shade of blue.  Gerimo's mouth quirked in a smile.  Colored contacts, how droll.  Perhaps his new friend was a bit vain.  Of course the color wasn't as unsettling as the way his gaze refused to leave the host's face, bu

It had finally happened.  Always before, when he'd been left alone, he'd known where the man was, how to get there and... now something was different.  The smile fell from his face, ripping at the cardboard and showing the hollowness inside.
With a glare he turned to stare at the small, burlap thing that stared at him, mouth turned into a small grin.
"This is your fault!  You broke the spell and let him escape.  I was wearing him down, slowly winning over his heart and you... you took him from me," the small black and white creature said.

The majority of the troops knew better than to enter their young general's tent before her aide de camp had served her breakfast. Even more knew that she should only be woken before her dawn sword practice in case of acute emergency. However, these rules did not seem to apply to the two young women who slipped, giggling, through the canvas in the pre-dawn light. Had a stranger seen them, they would hardly have guessed that one was the General of the Army, or that the other was about to become an Empress. However, it was no feat to see that they were sisters. One sat at the foot of the bedroll, the other at the head, and they chorused, "WAKE U Two doors, both closed at this moment, were the only way into and out of the darkened room, illuminated by wall torches of eerie blue fire.  The torches lit up just enough of the room to discern that the walls and floor were all made of the same slate gray stone, and that there was a table with two chairs in the center of the room. The table was a darkly stained oak table, there were nicks, gouges, and deep trenches carved into the table's surface, for this table had seen many battles of all different kinds, but never before had it been used for a battle such as this.   Besides the sparse furniture there were only two peop

To provide the reader with original works to read, critique and enjoy.

CRITIQUES

Positive input along with constructive criticism is welcome. If you feel that the author may improve their story in anyway please present your opinion in the above manner.

While reader input is welcome critiques are not meant to slash and bash the authors.
